A survey from Monster.com found that two-thirds of working adults spend notable amount of time to daydream about having a different job. While this might seem harmless, dreaming about working in different role could be a sign that many employees are unfulfilled with their current position. Among common reasons of this phenomenon are because they feel underemployed or do not find the jobs challenging anymore. They might also have a toxic workplace or deal with difficult supervisor.

Not only about having new job, many workers also daydream about their current situation or even personal life while in a meeting or during their working hours. Thus, does daydreaming give bad impact to either company or productivity?

Eclipse Technoconsulting cited that “daydreaming might appear to be a waste of time. However, projects which are guided by rich imagination often run into fewer problems.  Even while not looking at anything in particular, daydreamer is granted with an incalculably valuable vision.” Giant company like Google allows its employees to spend up to 20 percent of their time at office daydreaming. Hence, daydreaming might not harm company or workers. It will benefit them, instead.

According to Georgia Institute of Technology study, daydreaming is a sign of cleverness. Eric Schumacher, Georgia Tech associate psychology professor and co-author of the study, said that “people with efficient brains may have too much brain capacity to stop their minds from wandering.” It implies that those who are more frequent daydreaming have higher score on intellectual and creative ability. The findings of the study also revealed that absent-minded individual who is off on his own world, sometimes oblivious to their own surroundings. “School children – for example – who are too intellectually advanced for their classes. While it may take five minutes for their friends to learn something new, they figure it out in a minute then check out and start daydreaming”, added Schumacher.

Moreover, Wellbe survey agreed that daydreaming can add more creativity to individuals who did it. It also helps them visualise a bigger solution by gaining new perspective on problem or linking to previously disjointed thought to come up with an original idea.   • Daydreaming turns off other parts of the brain – You have two parts of brain, analytic one and emphatic one. When your mind wander, it naturally cycles through different modes of thinking. During this time, your brain tends to turn each other off.
  • Your brain (not your mind) controls your daydreams – When you daydreaming, your brain naturally fluctuates in certain ways. Thus, it shape the structure of your daydreaming.
  • Daydreaming makes you creative – Many studies have proved that daydreaming can improve creativity. It is because daydreams give you insight of wisdom which oftentimes, gives you solutions to problems that you have not considered before.

“Hey. Want to grab some burgers from that new café?”

Do you often experience similar case as above? When the deadlines are coming close, it makes us feel like we cannot spare those precious 30 minutes to get out of the desk. Everything can happen in minutes, so if we take lunch away from the telephone and computer, we are afraid that we will miss urgent calls or emails. There are various reasons why people choose eating at their desk rather than allocating some time to the office cafeteria. Some people think that getting lunch at their cube or desks is okay because it will save them time and is more practical, while some others are simply too comfy sitting on the chair that they do not care to move. Whatever the reason is, lunch is not merely sometime to gulp in food, so you have energy to get the job done.

More than that, lunch should be a great time to refresh your body and mind after hours of being immersed in the pile of work. Messy and smelly desk

One obvious reason to never eat lunch on your desk is because it will make your cube all messy and smelly. Desk is the place where you finish your jobs, so you should make it comfortable to keep it clean and neat. What happens if you have lunch while staring at your computer 9 hours straight in a day? Multitasking and finishing the job earlier? Nope. It will only make you unhealthy. First, you will only be stressful as you cannot get your attention away from work.  Second, you have no chance to get up and move from your desk, which is not good for your bone.

Third, staring at the screen too long will make your eyes tired and worsen your eyesight. Fourth, you cannot get fresh air to energise your mind. Fifth, you will have no time for a short-walk after lunch to burn some calories so the foods will not pile up and become fat. Less productive

Surprisingly, eating lunch at the desk does not make you more productive. Contrary to popular beliefs, eating lunch at desk does not improve one’s productivity and efficiency. If you think that you can focus on the job while munching your lunch, you are wrong.

Our body and brain has physical limitation that needs to be rested, and eating out with your co-workers is the simplest thing you can do to refresh them. After coming back from lunch, you will be ready to maximise your productivity until the rest of the day.

Interviews often have similar questions in some ways like ‘how do you describe yourself?’ or ‘what are the weaknesses and strengths do you have’? Questions related to a willingness to take risks

A common question like ‘Are you afraid to fail?’ seems to be easy to answer as everybody would say ‘No’ as the diplomatic answer. A tactical interviewer would replace the question with ‘What are the things you have done in our career that you are most proud of and least proud of?’ The question sounds different, but it has a similar goal, to figure out your willingness to take risks and making mistakes!

When you say proudly about your ability to transform an issue to a good lesson and not afraid to make more mistakes (not the same ones, of course), the interviewer will probably give points for that. Conversely, when you are disappointed in making mistakes and don’t want to make more mistakes, you are considered as someone who doesn’t take risks. Nobody never not make mistakes!

Questions related to willingness to learn

Instead of asking a common question like ‘Do you love to learn something new?’, a tricky question will be more revealing like ‘How do you spend your off time?’. If one has a great curiosity and willingness to learn, he/she might give answers like learning a Photoshop software or trying a new Italian recipe rather than being inactive. If you love to do both at the off times, give the more prospective answer.

Questions related to willingness to help others

Smart candidates would be nothing if she/he doesn’t want to help others, resulting in being a bad team member.  A common question like ‘Are you a helpful and enjoy teamwork?’ would be better replaced with ‘If you were to describe yourself as one of these elements -earth, fire, water, and air- which one it would be?’

The main focus is not about what element you choose, as there are no right or wrong answers. It would be more impressive when you can explain why you chose the element and the relationship of how it benefits the others.

Questions related to revealing inner drive

Interviewers are often curious about how someone would see themselves at work. Whether she/he would be the passive worker, doing tasks based on the top’ orders or as an active worker, doing a task passionately and experimenting to gain more optimal outcomes than the company’s had expected.

A question like: ‘How do you balance your life and work?’ would be revealing if someone is trying to control a lot of portion of their lives or if they have a good attitude towards work and personal life.

Those are some samples of revealing questions but your interviewer’s questions might vary in some different ways. The most important thing is that your answer should depict your own point of view, and not somebody else’s to gain a great impression. It is worth to remember that every interviewer’s question essentially wants to figure out your perspective and attitude towards the job position itself. Is Work-Life Balance a Myth?

People keep trying to reach work-life balance. But, how many has achieved it? You may have heard that work-life balance is a total myth, because how can you be sure that you did split work and life equally? Most likely, there would be a ‘side’ you prefer.

Some people are just plainly workaholics. Workaholics enjoy their job or for some, feel compelled to do it. Thus, working on off days are pretty common for them. While others who don’t think their job as everything, put more attention on family, friends, significant others and their personal well-being.

 

The idea of Work-Life Balance

Work-life balance can happen when you have it sorted out. The idea is to compartmentalise “work” activities (working in the office, meetings, business trips) and “life” activities (spending time with your loved ones, keeping healthy by sleeping or do some sports). Realistically, it is impossible to make it a 50-50.

If you analyse “work-life balance” itself, you will figure out two assumptions which are:

  1. Work and life are separate entities
  2. The “life” are equal, if not more, important than the “work”.

With this knowing, you would realise the difficulty to reach work-life balance.

 

Is “work-life balance” really a myth?

If you agree with the definitions above, then yes, work-life balance is a myth. Work-life balance only can be present if you stop regarding work as a separate entity. Wherever you go, you can work. Thanks to technology.

In the end, work-life balance can only happen when there is no line dividing work and life. You can have work-life balance, as long as those two things are one in the same for your end.

 

The tips for work-life balance

The key is to understand your priorities. There are moments when work requires more of your time, yet there are moments when your loved ones need your presence. Always ask yourself “What are your priorities for the day?”, Then focus on that. During workdays, focus on what needs to be accomplished and perhaps there might be times where you need to do a little overtime. It’s alright! As long as you make sure, you did make time for your “life” activities.

Another question to answer is: “What is the best you can do today?”. Today, you may spend 9 hours at work, and only 60 minutes to gather with your family. Tomorrow, you might perhaps spend half a day on your “life” activities and possibly only 10-minutes for work (emails, etc.).

The idea of balance is that you will adequately spread out yourself with the various activities and ensure a healthy well-being overall.

  • Creating a feeling of uselessness

Putting someone as an object of criticism, usually for unwarranted reasons.

  • Intimidation

1)    Start your day with a to-do list.

After listing your tasks, prioritize them according to importance and deadlines. One simple way is to give an ABC rating of your tasks – ‘A’ for critical ones (must be done by the day), ‘B’ for less urgent but important tasks (can be tackled after ‘A’) and ‘C’ (can be completed later). Doing so will help you to stay focused.

 

2)    Procrastinate no more.

Do you find yourself doing tasks that you like first? Tackle more challenging tasks when your energy level is high at the start of the day. It is tough to be productive when you start feeling tired during the day. Overcome procrastination by breaking complex projects into smaller parts so you can focus on completing one at a time.

 

3)    Organise your desk.

Are you spending too much time on searching for documents, tools or files? A cluttered desk can be a source of stress. Precious time can be saved if you keep your desk organized. Remove the clutter on your desk by designating places for different items, getting rid of things that you don’t need and creating folders for meetings and projects.

Do not feel guilty when you take a toilet break or walk to the pantry for a coffee break. Studies have shown that taking regular breaks at work can improve productivity. 5)    Learn to say no.

Being excellent at work does not mean you have to say yes all the time.  9)    Concentrate single-mindedly on a task.

Single-handling is a powerful time management technique for boosting productivity and improving efficiency. Once you start on a task, put your heart into it. Be disciplined and do not switch tasks halfway. Stay at it until its completion.

 

10)  Live a healthy lifestyle.
